ישעיהו, פרק נ׳, פסוק ה׳

Isaiah 50:5Sefaria

A true spiritual calling demands complete surrender and a willingness to embrace the unknown. When a divine message is delivered, often carried through the medium of angels [רד״ק], it brings with it the revelation of deep secrets and hidden truths [אבן עזרא, שד״ל]. The primary approach among commentators is that this profound awakening refers to the exact moment God sounded the heavenly call, asking whom He should send. This spiritual opening is not limited to receiving divine words; it also expands the capacity to truly hear and understand other people [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, it reflects a supreme spiritual state, echoing the revelation at Mount Sinai where angels whispered God's commands directly to the Israelites [אהבת יהונתן].

Faced with such an overwhelming revelation, the natural human instinct might be to refuse. It was entirely possible to reject these unique spiritual powers and choose the quiet life of an ordinary person [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, the response was one of immediate and total acceptance, answering the divine call without any hesitation or rebellion [מצודת ציון], and stepping forward with a ready heart to be sent [רש״י, רד״ק]. This obedience takes on a deeper meaning when considering the nature of the task. It is one thing to deliver messages of hope, but the true test of dedication is accepting the burden of delivering God's harsh warnings of wrath and disaster without refusal [נחל שורק, חומת אנך].

Once the mission was accepted, there was no turning back [מצודת ציון]. This steadfastness serves to emphasize a complete lack of refusal [מצודת דוד], but it also highlights immense personal bravery. There was no shrinking away from the sheer, overwhelming power of the prophecy itself [אהבת יהונתן], nor was there any retreat out of fear of the people receiving the message [מלבי״ם]. Even when delivering difficult truths resulted in intense hostility, physical beatings, and deep disrespect, the commitment remained unshaken until the mission was fully complete [נחל שורק, חומת אנך].

While this profound dedication is generally understood as the personal experience of a single chosen messenger, another perspective broadens its meaning. Rather than focusing solely on one individual, this unwavering commitment reflects the voice of the righteous and worthy individuals among the Israelites. They, too, declare their readiness to listen closely to God's word, maintaining their faith and never stepping back from fulfilling His commandments [שד״ל].
