Absolute trust in God provides an unbreakable shield against those who seek to condemn or silence the truth. Knowing that God offers His support means no accuser can successfully claim that justice lies elsewhere [רד״ק, שד״ל]. The primary approach among commentators is that the speaker here is the prophet, boldly declaring his fearlessness in the face of trials, struggles, and verbal attacks. Even when people accuse him of speaking falsely, he remains undisturbed, knowing his messages come directly from God [מלבי״ם, צאינה וראינה, אבן עזרא]. Another perspective suggests the speaker represents the entire nation of Israel, standing against the Babylonians who attempt to deny God's power [שד״ל]. This confidence does not mean enemies will never try to attack, as many certainly did. Rather, it guarantees that anyone who attempts to condemn God's messenger will ultimately meet their own destruction [רד״ק].
The fate of these opponents is pictured through the natural decay of old clothes. They will perish and rot, their existence proving as temporary and fragile as worn out rags [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. This picture is completed by the image of a moth, a small worm that naturally consumes fabric [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].
Looking deeper into this double imagery of a rotting garment and a consuming moth reveals profound insights into how these enemies will fall. One approach sees a difference between internal and external destruction. A garment naturally rots over time due to its own internal weakness, while a moth attacks it from the outside. Similarly, the opponents will collapse both from their own inherent flaws and from an external force, which is God's punishment [מלבי״ם].
Another approach connects these two images to the way arguments and debates play out. A piece of clothing wears out when it is used constantly. In the same way, the opponents will exhaust themselves and wear out if they continuously push their false arguments. On the other hand, a moth typically eats a garment specifically when it is left sitting unused. Therefore, if the prophet simply ignores the false claims of his enemies and refuses to engage in debate, those lies will be consumed like a moth-eaten shirt. Left untouched and ignored, the false arguments will fade away on their own [מלבי״ם].
A unique allegorical interpretation takes the image of a decaying garment in a completely different direction, connecting it to a cosmic courtroom. According to this view, the nations of the world argue that heaven and earth cannot serve as fair witnesses for Israel. They claim these witnesses are biased because the very survival of the universe depends on Israel keeping the Torah. The response to this accusation is that all of creation will eventually wear out like an old piece of clothing. Because heaven and earth are not eternal, they have no permanent personal interest in the outcome. Therefore, their testimony in favor of Israel is entirely valid and will ultimately silence those who hate them [אהבת יהונתן].
