Isaiah 65:17Sefaria

The promise of future redemption carries a transformation so dramatic and comprehensive that it feels like the entire universe is being born anew. An overwhelming wave of goodness and peace will entirely erase the painful scars of the past, ushering in an era of physical, spiritual, and national perfection.

Some commentators interpret this cosmic renewal literally, viewing it as the actual creation of a brand new physical world However, the primary approach among commentators is that this is a powerful metaphor. Because of the sheer abundance of success and tranquility, the world will experience a wondrous renewal, feeling as though it were created fresh and completely free of hardship This profound shift symbolizes a complete transformation in the political and national standing of the people following their redemption [שד״ל].

Taking a more naturalistic perspective, this renewal is also understood through biology and nature. The renewed heavens represent a purification of the atmosphere, creating healthy air that will significantly extend human life, while the renewed earth represents a massive boost in the soil's agricultural vitality This interpretation firmly places the events in our current world rather than a heavenly afterlife, as the surrounding context clearly involves everyday human activities like eating, drinking, and planting [אבן עזרא]. Going beyond the familiar laws of nature, another approach suggests that the very fabric of physical matter will change. While our current reality relies on cycles of creation and destruction that inevitably include death and tragedy, the future reality will be fundamentally altered to completely eliminate suffering and loss [מלבי״ם].

From a spiritual and providential angle, the renewal in the heavens points to a major shift in the cosmic balance of power. The heavenly forces representing the other nations will be humbled, while the heavenly representative of Israel will rise, a shift that will directly impact the earthly realm [רש״י]. Similarly, this transformation is seen as a change in the stars and constellations. Just as a specific alignment of stars signaled the Exodus from Egypt, a new and more powerful celestial arrangement will emerge. This system will block the negative influences of other nations and shower the world with prophecy, freedom, and joy. Naturally, this heavenly renewal will produce a corresponding renewal on earth, elevating the spiritual status of the Land of Israel and joyfully gathering its people back home [אברבנאל].

In the wake of this new reality, the assurance that the past will fade from memory does not refer to the old sky and ground. Instead, it refers to the historical troubles, disasters, and sins of previous generations The future will be so intensely good that these past agonies will be entirely forgotten, with the absolute nature of this forgetting heavily emphasized [מצודת דוד]. Additionally, these forgotten elements include the ancient celestial systems that originally decreed exile and suffering upon Israel [אברבנאל]. Ultimately, in a reality where evil has been completely uprooted, humanity will simply lose the ability to even imagine concepts like death, loss, and suffering, ensuring these dark thoughts never cross their minds again [מלבי״ם].
