A dangerous military alliance takes shape between Aram and the Kingdom of Israel, united by a shared goal to attack Judah and overthrow its government. This scheme is driven by profound arrogance, as the enemy forces act out of a blind belief that victory depends solely on their own military power and strategic intellect [מצודת דוד]. They carefully craft a malicious plan, calculating their exact moves to ensure the downfall of Judah [מלבי״ם]. Their ultimate objective is to wage war, lay siege to Jerusalem, breach its protective walls, and install a puppet king who will quietly serve their interests [אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

The exposure of this calculated plot serves as the foundation for an immediate Divine response. Because of their wicked and boastful intentions [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד], God decrees that their grand strategy will completely fail. He promises that instead of bringing ruin to Jerusalem, the enemies' malicious efforts will backfire, ultimately bringing destruction upon their own capital cities [אברבנאל].
