As the reign of King Zedekiah draws to a close, a stark prophecy outlines the divergent fates awaiting the people. A clear line is drawn between the Israelites exiled to Babylon and those who remain behind. The exiles are destined to thrive, finding both spiritual and physical prosperity in their new reality. In sharp contrast, those who stay will face repeated waves of suffering [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The impending disasters are targeted and severe. The threat of violence and war is aimed specifically at those who will attempt to return to the Land of Israel [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the result of these relentless hardships is absolute ruin. The remaining population will face total annihilation, completely perishing and disappearing from the face of the earth [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
