וּנְתַתִּים֙ (לזועה) [לְזַעֲוָ֣ה] לְרָעָ֔ה לְכֹ֖ל מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָאָ֑רֶץ לְחֶרְפָּ֤ה וּלְמָשָׁל֙ לִשְׁנִינָ֣ה וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה בְּכׇל־הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת אֲשֶֽׁר־אַדִּיחֵ֥ם שָֽׁם׃

The punishment of exile carries a devastating reality. Those driven from their homeland do not merely lose their country; they become a living symbol of suffering, evoking deep horror and shock among the nations around them. The core of this reaction is a profound sense of trembling, shuddering, and terror [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There are different perspectives on who exactly experiences this intense fear. One approach suggests that the surrounding nations of the world will shudder in terror when they hear about the massive disaster that has struck the exiled people [רש״י]. Another perspective shifts the focus to the exiles themselves, explaining that God hands them over to foreign kingdoms who will actively terrorize and harm them [מצודת דוד]. A third view ties this terror to historical persecution, noting that the host nations will tremble and suffer because Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, will relentlessly hunt the exiles down, invading the very countries that gave them refuge [מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical danger, the exiles are destined to endure severe social humiliation wherever they are taken. They will face constant shame and insults, even in distant regions untouched by the Babylonian armies [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Their tragic fate will be so extreme that their very identity will become a proverb, serving as the ultimate symbol of disaster and ruin [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Society will obsessively recount the story of their downfall [רש״י, מצודת דוד], using harsh and mocking language to describe their ruin [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, they will be reduced to a common curse. People will use their tragedy as a dark figure of speech, cursing their own enemies by wishing upon them the exact same miserable fate that befell these broken exiles [מצודת דוד].
