A specific moment in time marks a fateful historical and spiritual crossroads, binding the destiny of the Kingdom of Judah to the rising Babylonian Empire. The fourth year of King Jehoiakim's reign carries profound spiritual weight. At this exact time, the decree for the nation to go into exile and face the anger of God was ultimately sealed. However, just moments before this final judgment was locked in place, a prophecy was delivered to Jeremiah. This served as one last opportunity to warn the people, holding out hope that they might repent and overturn the harsh decree [רש״י].

The timeline of these events presents a historical puzzle. While the fourth year of Jehoiakim aligns with the first year of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, other records indicate that Nebuchadnezzar had already arrived to besiege Jerusalem during Jehoiakim's third year. To understand this, one must look at the sequence of events. Nebuchadnezzar indeed rose to power and began his march toward Jerusalem during Jehoiakim's third year. His primary motivation was a deep hatred for the King of Egypt, who acted as Jehoiakim's patron and had originally placed him on the throne of Judah [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. The historical accounts count three complete years of Jehoiakim's rule, whereas the prophecy was given at the very beginning of his fourth year, marking Nebuchadnezzar's official first year as king [אברבנאל].

At the dawn of this fourth year, God handed Jehoiakim over to Nebuchadnezzar, who bound the Judean king in chains with the intent of exiling him to Babylon. Yet, during the journey, Jehoiakim begged for his life. He fully surrendered and submitted to Babylonian rule, earning permission to return to Jerusalem. For three years, he ruled as a vassal king under Babylon before eventually rebelling for another five years. This rebellion ultimately led to his second and final exile in the eleventh year of his reign [אברבנאל].
