איוב, פרק כ״ט, פסוק י״ב

Job 29:12Sefaria

כִּֽי־אֲ֭מַלֵּט עָנִ֣י מְשַׁוֵּ֑עַ וְ֝יָת֗וֹם וְֽלֹא־עֹזֵ֥ר לֽוֹ׃

Looking back on his past, Job reflects on his unique position in society. He rose above other leaders through his deep dedication to justice and kindness [מלבי״ם]. Utilizing his high status, whether serving as a judge or simply as a respected figure whose advice was widely accepted, he actively intervened to protect the weak [רמב״ן]. Job consistently stepped in to save those who were suffering [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. When a poor person cried out for rescue from oppressors [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], often calling out to God after experiencing robbery or exploitation, Job would rush to their aid and restore what had been taken [תקות אנוש]. He extended this same protection to the orphan and to anyone left entirely without support [ביאור שטיינזלץ], especially those whose fortunes had suddenly turned, leaving them abandoned by the people who once helped them [מצודת דוד]. Beyond taking direct action, he also brought joy and comfort to the brokenhearted with reassuring words [תקות אנוש].

Beyond these acts of physical rescue, Job's actions carried a profound spiritual weight. At times, God withholds a poor person's livelihood and places it in the hands of the wealthy, creating an opportunity for both to gain the merit of charity. However, a starving person, overwhelmed by grief, might speak out against God and face harsh divine punishment for their words. By feeding the hungry and supporting the orphan, Job did more than sustain their bodies. He actually saved them from severe spiritual judgment, ensuring they never fell into the kind of deep despair that would lead them to complain against God [אלשיך].
