איוב, פרק כ״ט, פסוק כ״א

Job 29:21Sefaria

לִֽי־שָׁמְע֥וּ וְיִחֵ֑לּוּ וְ֝יִדְּמ֗וּ לְמ֣וֹ עֲצָתִֽי׃

Job looks back on his past days of greatness, recalling a time when he commanded immense respect and the masses looked to him with deep admiration. The primary approach among commentators is that people gathered around him with absolute attention, eager to benefit from his wisdom [אלשיך]. They did not merely listen. Instead, they waited with profound hope and longing for him to begin speaking [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

This intense anticipation reveals the true nature of their respect. Their submission to Job stemmed from love and an appreciation of his elevated character rather than fear. A person who is simply afraid of a ruler does not actively seek out their commands, yet the people actively desired to hear his insights [מלבי״ם]. A slightly different perspective suggests that their waiting and hoping was directed at the outcome of his words. They hoped his advice would successfully materialize in reality, which it consistently did due to the profound tradition of wisdom he held [רש״י].

Once Job began to speak, the crowd fell into absolute silence, a stillness compared to the profound quiet of Aaron the High Priest [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג]. This complete silence in the face of his guidance [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] occurred because no one dared to offer their own counsel before him [אלשיך], nor did anyone have the audacity to argue or reply to his words [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, this quiet attention underscored the very reason they gathered, as they came specifically to seek his direction [מלבי״ם].
