Job 29:19Sefaria

שׇׁרְשִׁ֣י פָת֣וּחַ אֱלֵי־מָ֑יִם וְ֝טַ֗ל יָלִ֥ין בִּקְצִירִֽי׃

In the days before his suffering, Job enjoyed a profound sense of absolute security and peace. He viewed his life through the lens of a thriving, vibrant tree, fully believing that his endless success and stability would never fade. He pictured his existence as a tree with roots exposed directly to flowing water, constantly drawing life and remaining forever nourished [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Above ground, dew would settle continuously on its tender upper branches, providing an unbroken supply of gentle moisture from above [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, מצודת ציון, רמב״ן].

The primary approach among commentators is that this rich imagery reflects Job’s quiet confidence that his prosperity would never run dry [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Expanding on this physical and material security, [המלבי״ם] divides the metaphor into two distinct layers of Job's life. The well-watered roots represent his personal health and physical strength, which he assumed would never wither. Meanwhile, the upper branches bathed in dew symbolize his external blessings—the safety and peace of his children, his household, and his wealth.

In contrast to this focus on physical well-being, [האלשיך] elevates the imagery into the spiritual realm, connecting it to the purity of the soul and the future resurrection of the dead. In this view, the root is not a physical anchor but the human soul itself, planted firmly in the upper worlds and openly receiving God's holy abundance without any barrier. The physical body is likened to the branch, while the dew represents the divine dew that God will use to revive the dead. According to this perspective, Job is expressing a deep confidence in his own spiritual purity. He believed his soul was so refined that, when the time for resurrection comes, his body would not require any period of cleansing. Instead, God's reviving dew would rest upon him immediately.
