Job looks back with deep longing to a time when he experienced close divine supervision and clear guidance. In those days, a sense of security wrapped around him, carrying him safely even through the hardest moments. A shining light represents a time when God's lamp beamed brightly upon him [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ], marking a period filled with light and joy [רש״י]. The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a metaphor for God's constant watchfulness, protection, and the abundance He provided. It was as if God placed a lit lamp directly over Job's head, illuminating all his paths and choices [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Other scholars, however, view this not merely as physical protection, but as a profound spiritual and mental success. In this view, the divine lamp filled Job with wisdom and understanding, acting as an inner light that brightened his very soul [מלבי״ם].

Because of this divine light, Job was able to walk confidently through complete darkness [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Commentators explain that the darkness represents the general troubles and hardships of the world. When tragedy and gloom fell upon everyone else, Job remained completely untouched. He possessed his own private light and joy, which shielded him and showed him the way forward [רש״י, רמב״ן, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

A unique perspective shifts the focus from a memory of the past to a deep wish for the present. According to this approach, a person's soul does not feel pain in the darkness of the physical world as long as God's light shines upon it. Job longs for that same divine light to shine on him right now, simply to prove that his current suffering holds spiritual value. If he could only see that light, he would willingly walk through the deep darkness of his severe pain without a single complaint. However, because he cannot see any meaning or benefit in his present agony, he has lost all strength to endure it [אלשיך].
