Job 30:13Sefaria

נָֽתְס֗וּ נְֽתִיבָ֫תִ֥י לְהַוָּתִ֥י יֹעִ֑ילוּ לֹ֖א עֹזֵ֣ר לָֽמוֹ׃

When a person hits rock bottom, forces often gather to push them even deeper into despair. This suffering can take the form of pure malice from strangers, the bitter betrayal of close friends, or spiritual accusations in the heavenly realms. The attackers actively disrupt and destroy Job's good path in life, effectively preventing him from moving forward and acting on his desires [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Every action these pursuers take serves only one grim purpose: to increase the sheer scale of the disaster and ruin [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רלב״ג].

Adding a layer of tragic irony to the situation, Job originally hoped his friends would step in to help him face this very ruin. Instead, those he trusted to stand by his side abandoned him, destroying his path and transforming into his enemies [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators views this cruelty as an expression of pure malice and senseless hatred. The attackers gain absolutely no personal benefit or advantage from their actions, yet they continue to inflict pain simply to cause harm [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that the attackers behave as though they actually profit from the suffering. They do not even need extra help to inflict their damage, because their victim is entirely helpless and unable to escape their grasp [רמב״ן].

From a spiritual standpoint, these attackers are seen as heavenly accusers. The scope of a person's troubles is directly tied to the extent of their sins. Because Job possesses a high moral character and his sins are relatively few, the accusers are restricted. They only have the power to break open a single, narrow path and bring about one specific disaster. These spiritual prosecutors cannot find the additional strength or help required to bring broader, more numerous evils upon him, as his righteousness simply does not leave room for such a widespread attack [אלשיך].
