A vivid picture of intense social rejection and humiliation emerges, portraying the total banishment of corrupt individuals from civilized society. Because of their severe flaws and lowly actions, these outcasts are driven far away from the heart of the city and human companionship [רש״י, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their isolation is absolute. Any attempt they make to return and re-enter the town is met with fierce resistance. The locals raise their voices in unison, shouting at them to stay away. The public shaming and loud cries of the mob resemble the chaotic noise of people chasing down a caught thief [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. For some, this comparison to a thief is not merely a metaphor. Rather, these individuals are exiled precisely because they are actual thieves, forced to wander endlessly and live a rough, nomadic existence among riverbeds and forests [רמב״ן].

In contrast to this literal social interpretation, a spiritual approach understands this banishment as a reality that takes place after death. In this view, the departure is not from a physical city, but from the physical body itself. The souls of the wicked are forcibly driven out of their bodies, finding no peace or rest in the afterlife. Instead, they face constant judgment and are transformed into harmful spirits that wander through desolate deserts, terrorizing travelers. Their malicious work is done completely in secret. Much like a stealthy thief, they remain entirely unseen, striking fear into the hearts of people without ever revealing their true presence [אלשיך].
