The Leviathan is protected by a natural suit of armor made of dense, tightly sealed scales that provide absolute protection. Commentators agree that each scale touches and firmly sticks to the one beside it. Some specify that this connection occurs along the wide sides of the scales, which align perfectly with one another to create a continuous shield [מלבי״ם].

The seal between these scales is entirely flawless, a detail understood through two complementary viewpoints. One approach explains this literally, noting that the scales are glued together so securely that not even air can penetrate them [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Another perspective suggests that there is absolutely no empty space or gap left between one scale and the next [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אלשיך].

This impenetrable barrier is maintained even when the creature is in motion. When the Leviathan rouses itself and proudly raises its scales, one might normally expect open spaces to form in its defense. Instead, the armored structure remains completely closed and perfectly sealed [אלשיך].
