Wrapped in a perfect, seamless shell, the beast appears entirely invulnerable to any attack. This magnificent defense system fills the creature with a profound sense of superiority and pride [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רמב״ן]. Others view this pride not as an emotion, but as a physical description of the armor itself, pointing to the impressive height and thickness of its scales [רלב״ג], or the imposing way they rise when the beast stirs to move [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that the creature is covered in scales that function as massive, powerful shields [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא], arranged across its body in strong belts or solid blocks [שטיינזלץ]. However, an alternative perspective suggests that these formidable shields actually refer to its incredibly strong teeth rather than its scales [אבן עזרא].

Focusing on its armored body, the defense is completely airtight. Each scale is fused so firmly to the creature's skin and to the neighboring scales that it cannot shift out of place [מצודת דוד].
