איוב, פרק ז׳, פסוק ט״ו

Job 7:15Sefaria

וַתִּבְחַ֣ר מַחֲנָ֣ק נַפְשִׁ֑י מָ֝֗וֶת מֵעַצְמוֹתָֽי׃

There exists a profound, bottomless despair where the sheer agony of existence overpowers the basic human drive to stay alive. When pain reaches such an unbearable depth, the inner spirit begs for a violent end, desperate to escape its confinement within a tortured physical form.

The primary approach among commentators is that the soul actively craves suffocation, viewing the end of life as far better than continuing to live [מלבי״ם]. This specific desire for a violent end stems from the extreme severity of the afflictions. It is preferable to choke to death than to endure a disease of the bones, an illness that is deeply rooted, severe, and incurable when compared to ordinary ailments of the flesh [תקות אנוש].

A unique perspective frames this as an internal struggle between the soul and the body over how to escape such terrible suffering. The soul decides to bring about its own suffocation, feeling justified in doing so because the physical form is already essentially dead. With the skin and flesh eaten away, life lingers only in the bones. The soul feels entirely disconnected from the body, remaining inside it only by a miracle, and therefore seeks to finally bring the arrangement to a close [אלשיך].

Ultimately, the soul makes a twofold choice: it chooses suffocation, and it chooses death over remaining within the physical limbs [מלבי״ם]. These limbs act as the core structural supports that hold a person upright [מצודת ציון], [רש״י], [רלב״ג]. Just as a house relies on its foundation and pillars, the body serves as a house for the soul. Yet, in this state of relentless suffering, the soul completely rejects its residence, preferring the finality of death over staying another moment in its broken home [אבן עזרא].
