Joel 1:15Sefaria

A profound cry of despair echoes in the face of an unavoidable and approaching disaster. A warning of ruin connects an immediate tragedy to the direct action of divine judgment. A voice of groaning, wailing, and fear cries out over the terrible time that is destined to arrive This overwhelming dread stems from two main realities: the harsh decree is advancing rapidly, and because it is guided by direct divine providence, there is absolutely no way to escape it [מלבי״ם]. The approaching time of judgment is a period when God punishes the nation through a devastating locust plague. The wicked actions of the people have caused His attribute of mercy to transform into the attribute of strict justice [חומת אנך]. Furthermore, dealing with this immediate calamity awakens a deeper anxiety regarding the great day of judgment that will take place at the end of days [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The impending ruin is compared to a sudden and devastating plundering by robbers. The primary approach among commentators is that the locust plague will plunder and ruin the land exactly as human thieves violently steal property. Because this destruction is sent directly by God, it operates with an overwhelming force that breaks the very laws of nature, ensuring that no one can withstand its power However, a completely different perspective, introduced by Rabbi Shmuel HaNagid, suggests that the term used to describe the source of this ruin does not refer to a name of God at all. According to this view, the word is actually rooted in concepts of strength, force, and victory. In this light, the devastation will arrive as a mighty, overpowering force of destruction that leaves absolutely no path for rescue
