A daring military challenge is met by a warrior of exceptional bravery, who in return for his courage wins a promised prize and marries into his own family. The man who steps forward to secure the conquest is Othniel the son of Kenaz, recognized as a great and mighty warrior [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Although Othniel is identified as Caleb's brother, the fact that their fathers have different names points to a specific family dynamic. They are maternal half-brothers [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ], with Othniel being significantly younger than Caleb. Following his decisive military victory, Othniel receives his reward, and Caleb gives him his daughter Achsah in marriage [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
