שופטים, פרק א׳, פסוק ד׳

The tribe of Judah steps forward to lead a military campaign against the Canaanites and Perizzites, resulting in a crushing victory. Judah takes full initiative to begin this war [ביאור שטיינזלץ], actively leading the people into battle to deliver a severe and heavy blow to their enemies [אברבנאל]. As a direct result of this proactive step, God hands the opposing forces over to them.

The decisive battle, which leaves ten thousand enemy soldiers defeated, takes place at a location known as Bezek. Commentators generally agree that this is the specific name of the city where the clash occurs, though they offer different views on exactly where the fighting happens in relation to the town itself.

The primary approach among commentators is that the battle unfolds directly inside the city limits. In contrast, another perspective suggests the combat actually takes place just outside its walls. According to this view, the military camps first move out and organize their troops in the open spaces surrounding the city, and this surrounding area is where the actual fighting and ultimate defeat of the enemy soldiers happens [מלבי״ם].
