Judges 16:12Sefaria

The battle of wits between Samson and Delilah continues to escalate as she makes her second attempt to neutralize his immense strength. Maintaining the facade of a playful lovers' game, Delilah takes new ropes and binds him while an ambush waits silently in the room, then calls out that the Philistines are attacking [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. She carries out this act entirely on her own, carefully hiding the fact that her actions are deliberate and coordinated with the enemy [אברבנאל].

Once again, the attempt fails when Samson breaks the ropes. However, there is a subtle shift in how he breaks them. Tearing the thick ropes like a thread indicates that, unlike his previous escape, this act was not completely effortless. It required a small amount of physical exertion, similar to the slight effort a person uses to snap a standard piece of sewing thread [מלבי״ם].

This event marks another critical step in their destructive relationship. In these first two attempts, Samson completely fools Delilah by giving her false information. In response, Delilah relies on emotional manipulation. She plays the role of a deeply hurt woman, complaining that his lies prove he does not truly love her, and demands to know the real secret to binding him. Samson remains completely unaware that she intends to hand him over to his enemies. In his naivety, he believes she is simply testing his devotion. Tragically, it is this exact misunderstanding that will soon cause him to move away from telling outright lies and begin dropping dangerous hints about the true source of his strength [אברבנאל].
