Judges 16:9Sefaria

Delilah orchestrates her first test to uncover the secret of Samson's immense power, bringing grave danger directly into his home. The trap is carefully set. A group of Philistine men waits in hiding, either in the very same room or tucked away in an inner chamber [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their plan is to remain concealed and observe whether Samson is truly secured before daring to reveal themselves

Delilah suddenly cries out that the Philistines are attacking him. This is a highly calculated move designed to force Samson to struggle. If he manages to break free, she can easily brush off the event as a playful test. However, if he fails to escape, the hidden men are ready to leap from their ambush and capture him [מצודת דוד]. When Samson easily snaps his restraints, the Philistines wisely remain in their hiding place. Because they never step forward, Samson is left believing that the entire event is nothing more than an innocent game [אלשיך].

Samson tears the restraints in two [מצודת ציון] with the effortless ease of snapping a fragile thread made of flax waste, a material known to catch fire instantly [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The destruction of the ropes is compared to a thread falling apart merely by getting close to a flame. This poetic exaggeration illustrates how the material disintegrates as if sensing the heat, even before the fire actually touches it

Ultimately, the secret of his power remains hidden. The primary approach among commentators is that Samson does not need to exert any real effort to break the bonds. The action is so incredibly easy for him that the true limit of his massive strength remains a complete mystery Alternatively, the event can be viewed through a more miraculous lens. According to this perspective, the restraints snap on their own simply because God is with him. Because no human effort is actually applied, the hidden observers witness divine intervention rather than physical power, leaving Samson's actual physical capabilities completely unrevealed [אלשיך].
