פרשת ויקרא

Leviticus 4:29Sefaria

Bringing a sin offering requires careful precision, from the personal actions of the person bringing it to the exact location where the service takes place in the Tabernacle. This strict attention to detail defines the validity and core meaning of the offering.

When instructing the person to lean their hands on the animal's head, the instruction repeats the noun for the sin offering rather than using a simple pronoun. [מלבי״ם, אדרת אליהו] explain that this repeated noun expands the rule to include additional cases. It teaches that the duty to lean one's hands applies not only to this specific animal but to other sin offerings as well, particularly the offering brought by an individual for the sin of idol worship.

The animal must then be slaughtered in the exact place used for the burnt offering. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the northern side of the altar. [תורה תמימה, מלבי״ם] point out that the requirement for this specific location is repeated many times regarding different sin offerings. This constant repetition makes it clear that slaughtering in the north is not merely a preference, but an absolute condition. If the animal is slaughtered anywhere else, the offering is completely invalid. By repeating this rule, it becomes obvious that it applies to all types of sin offerings without exception, preventing any mistaken belief that it only applies to certain categories.

Furthermore, the general phrasing used to describe the location hints at another requirement. Rather than specifically limiting the northern location to the act of slaughtering, the broader wording shows that it serves a wider purpose. [מלבי״ם, אדרת אליהו] note that the very next step of the service, receiving the animal's blood into a sacred vessel, must also take place in this same northern area.
