פרשת ויקרא

Leviticus 4:9Sefaria

Offering a sacrifice requires careful precision when separating the animal's internal organs. This physical process carries deep meaning about the root causes of human failure and the status of the sinner. Specifically, the fat resting on the flanks, located near the base of the animal's hind legs, must be removed [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Burning this fat on the altar is a deliberate choice. Fat represents the direct cause of wrongdoing, symbolizing a closed heart and the pride that blocks true understanding. Because arrogance naturally leads a person to stumble, the very substance that represents this original pride is offered up to God to achieve atonement [שפתי כהן].

The focus on specific organs, particularly the kidneys and the liver lobe, highlights a distinct difference between offerings. These parts are heavily detailed in the sacrifice brought by the High Priest, yet they are noticeably left out of the description for the communal sin offering. This stems from the High Priest's special standing as a dedicated servant of God. The dynamic is similar to a king who is angry with a beloved friend but downplays the severity of the mistake out of deep affection. By detailing the specific organs in the High Priest's sacrifice, the offering is elevated and beautified. This shows that God willingly accepts the sacrifice, gently minimizing the offense of His beloved servant [תורה תמימה].

Beyond these symbolic ideas, the focus on these specific organs sets practical rules for the sacrifices. The guidelines for the High Priest's bull are directly linked to the rules of the peace offering. This connection teaches that the strict laws of sacrilege, which forbid anyone from gaining personal benefit from sacred property, apply completely to these internal organs just as they do in the peace offering [תורה תמימה].
