נחום, פרק א׳, פסוק ט׳

Nahum 1:9Sefaria

A prophecy directed at the Assyrian empire and its capital, Nineveh, issues a firm challenge to their arrogance in the face of an absolute divine decree. The primary approach among commentators views this as a direct address to the people of Nineveh, questioning their futile attempts to scheme and prepare for a confrontation with God. It challenges their assumption that they can escape His hand or that He is incapable of carrying out His judgment. [רד״ק] connects this to the historical arrogance of the Assyrian king, who foolishly believed God would be unable to save Jerusalem from his grasp.

In contrast, [מלבי״ם] offers a different perspective, suggesting that the message aims to dismantle a flawed theological view. He explains that people harbor negative and unworthy thoughts about God, mistakenly believing His purpose is simply to cause harm and destroy. This, however, completely contradicts His true nature.

The impending reality is that God will bring complete and final destruction upon the Assyrians. The primary approach among commentators agrees that the strike against Assyria will be so decisive that there will be no need for a second blow; they will be wiped out entirely without any chance of recovery.

Offering a unique interpretation of this finality, [מלבי״ם] explains that the trouble being eliminated is not the punishment falling upon the Assyrians, but rather the Assyrian empire itself, which had become a source of suffering for the entire world. God does not desire to cause harm; instead, He is eradicating a global threat to ensure it never rises again. Even if the Assyrians experience a brief, temporary recovery, their ultimate downfall is guaranteed, ensuring this empire will never threaten the world a second time.
