Ezra was positioned on a high tower or elevated platform, rising above the entire assembly. This vantage point allowed everyone present to see him clearly. As he opened the Torah scroll to read, or, as some interpret, the moment he opened his mouth to speak [מצודת דוד], a powerful shift occurred in the crowd.

The people's immediate response to the opening of the scroll is understood in two distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators is that the reaction was not physical standing, but rather absolute and complete silence [רש״י, רס״ג, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. The moment the scroll was opened, all conversation ceased. The crowd froze in place, remaining completely still to focus entirely on understanding the words of the Torah [רלב״ג].
