As the Israelites traveled through the desert, their massive camp was highly organized into specific formations. The tribe of Gad marched as part of a three-tribe unit that together made up the larger camp of Reuben [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The leader guiding the tribe of Gad during these journeys was Eliasaph, the son of Deuel. A curious detail surrounds the name of his father. While he is known in this instance as Deuel, other records refer to him as Reuel. To resolve this difference, one approach suggests that his actual, original name was Daruel. Over time, the name was shortened, leading to either the "D" or the "R" being dropped in different accounts. This kind of shifting or swapping between these two specific letters is a recognized pattern in biblical history. It can be seen in several other names that appear with similar variations, such as Dodanim and Rodanim, Darda and Dara, or Achan and Achar [שד״ל].
