וַיִּסְע֖וּ בָּרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה עַל־פִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

The journey of the Israelites through the desert marks a significant turning point, shifting from spontaneous movement to a highly organized progression guided by a blend of divine and human leadership. The primary approach among commentators is that this stage does not represent the very first time the nation ever traveled. Rather, it is the first time they moved in a structured formation of banners and camps surrounding the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant. Prior to reaching Mount Sinai, the Tabernacle did not exist, meaning their departure from Egypt lacked a defined order. Now, they set out as an established nation, camping and traveling around their central sanctuary. Conversely, another perspective suggests that this initial phase does not point to a specific historical departure from Mount Sinai. Instead, it describes the first step of every single journey the nation undertook. In this view, the earliest preparations, such as packing up tents and clothing, always served as the preliminary action before moving [העמק דבר].

The progression of the journey also highlights a clear division of roles in guiding the nation. The divine signal was given visually when the cloud rose above the Tabernacle. In tandem, the human element was carried out through practical action, as Moses was responsible for sounding the trumpets. This blast served as the physical directive for the people and the Levites who carried the Tabernacle to begin their march [חזקוני, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Regarding how the overarching instruction to travel was communicated to Moses, a different approach suggests that God did not issue an explicit spoken command. Instead, the guidance came to Moses as an internal inspiration. This spiritual illumination prompted him to prepare the Israelites for their journey the following day, functioning in a manner similar to the transmission of the oral tradition [העמק דבר].
