After a prolonged encampment at the foot of the mountain, the Israelites uproot their massive camp and begin moving toward their next destination. The divine cloud, which charts their path, lifts and guides the entire nation into the new desert expanses of the Sinai Peninsula. Setting such a large and heavy camp into constant forward motion is a monumental shift from its previous state of rest [רש ר הירש]. As the cloud moves onward, the people faithfully follow [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their complete submission to the guidance of God's clouds of glory is the sole factor determining the course of their travel [שפתי כהן].

The travel is characterized in a plural sense, which commentators understand in two distinct ways. One approach focuses on the strict logistical order of the camp. The journey is executed exactly as instructed, following the precise arrangement of the tribal banners, with every tribe knowing exactly who marches first and who follows last [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מזרחי, גור אריה]. Conversely, another perspective views this language as a reflection of the journey's complexity. Rather than a single, continuous march, this departure marks the beginning of a long chain of travels and encampments that will eventually lead to the Land of Israel [ביאור יש״ר, העמק דבר].

The cloud eventually comes to rest in the Wilderness of Paran. This presents a geographical puzzle, as later records indicate that the very first stop after leaving Mount Sinai is actually a place called Kibroth-hattaavah. To resolve this, the primary approach among commentators is that Paran is not a specific, isolated stop, but rather the name of a vast, sweeping region. Within the broad borders of the Wilderness of Paran lie several distinct stations, including Kibroth-hattaavah, Hazeroth, and Kadesh. At this stage in the narrative, the goal is not to detail every intermediate stop, but simply to outline the general transition from one major desert region to another.
