Numbers 26:42Sefaria

The census of the tribe of Dan presents a unique genealogical phenomenon. Despite descending from a single son, the tribe expanded into a vast network of families, creating a striking contrast between a solitary father and the many branches that grew from him. This only son is identified as Shuham, known from earlier accounts in Genesis as Hushim The name itself carries a deeper meaning, hinting that his descendants would multiply and branch out abundantly, much like the leaves of a reed [אבי עזר].

A question naturally arises as to how a single individual could be described in the plural as multiple families. In the biblical framework, the concept of a family is flexible and can describe both a large overarching group and smaller, distinct sub-groups [רש ר הירש]. Over time, Shuham had many sons who went on to establish independent family units, causing the tribe to organically split into numerous branches

While each of these sub-families was likely known by the name of its specific founding father, they are all gathered together under the single, unifying title of the Shuhamite family. Because Shuham stood at the head of the dynasty, all subsequent branches were ultimately attributed to him and bore his name Another perspective connects this naming convention directly to the Israelites' arrival in Egypt. According to this approach, tribal families were officially named exclusively after the patriarchs who originally made the journey down to Egypt. Because Shuham was the sole descendant of Dan to make that journey, all the subsequent families formed by his descendants, who were born later in Egypt, could only trace their official tribal lineage back to him
