פרשת פנחס

Numbers 26:16Sefaria

לְאׇזְנִ֕י מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת הָאׇזְנִ֑י לְעֵרִ֕י מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת הָעֵרִֽי׃

The census of the tribe of Gad reveals the dramatic shifts and upheavals the Israelites experienced during their years wandering in the desert. When comparing the current families to those who originally went down to Egypt, certain names appear altered or missing entirely, reflecting deep historical and spiritual transformations.

The primary approach among commentators is that the family of Ozni is actually the family of Ezbon, one of Gad's original sons who relocated to Egypt. Because the tribal families were strictly named after those original ancestors, Ozni cannot be a completely new family. Instead, it is an alternative name for Ezbon [רש״י, מזרחי, ברטנורא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This shift from Ezbon to Ozni sparks considerable discussion. One perspective suggests that the original Ezbon family was nearly eradicated during the devastating plague that followed the incident of illicit relations triggered by Balaam's advice. Ozni was likely a prominent branch or a specific son within the Ezbon lineage. When the broader family was wiped out, this surviving branch flourished, and the entire family was subsequently renamed after him rather than the original patriarch [אור החיים, לבוש האורה, מלבי״ם, דברי דוד].

While some commentators acknowledge that the exact reason for the change remains a mystery [רש״י], others uncover profound conceptual and linguistic links between the two names. The name Ozni is closely related to the Hebrew word for an ear, or the act of listening. This suggests that the family was defined by their willingness to listen to the teachings of the Torah [שפתי כהן]. Alternatively, they heeded the rebuke of Aaron the High Priest, repented, and fulfilled the will of God. This creates a bridge between the two names: Ozni represents their listening, while Ezbon reflects doing God's will [ברכת אשר]. Furthermore, the original name Ezbon may actually stem from an Aramaic word that also means to listen, making the two names essentially identical in meaning [אור החיים].

Another fascinating interpretation connects Ezbon to the Hebrew word for a finger, and Ozni to an ear. According to tradition, human fingers are shaped like pegs so they can be inserted into the ears to block out negative speech. The tribe of Gad camped right next to the tribes of Reuben and Simeon, which produced notoriously wicked figures. To protect themselves from this toxic influence, the people of Gad had to metaphorically plug their ears with their fingers, earning them the name Ezbon. Once those wicked individuals perished in the plague, the family could finally unblock their ears and listen to wisdom, transitioning to the name Ozni [חתם סופר, ברכת אשר].

From a completely different angle, the name Ozni might be rooted in the word for weaponry, highlighting the exceptional physical bravery and martial prowess of the tribe of Gad [משכיל לדוד]. Finally, regarding the family of Eri, this name is associated with holy angels. It is said that Elijah the Prophet, who is famously compared to an angel, was destined to descend from this very family [שפתי כהן].
