Proverbs 17:20Sefaria

A person's inner character and the way they speak ultimately decide their fate. Trying to navigate the world using lies, flattery, or deceit guarantees a personal downfall. A person with a twisted mind naturally leans toward stubborn and deceitful thoughts [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. Because true success can only be reached by following established wisdom, someone who relies entirely on their own crooked logic will never find good [מלבי״ם]. In everyday financial matters, this plays out when a person borrows money while secretly planning never to pay it back. God responds to this malicious intention by blocking their ability to make a profit. As a result, even if they later change their mind and want to clear their debt, they will have absolutely nothing left to give [אלשיך].

An even more severe situation occurs when a person's speech becomes unstable, deceitful, and constantly changing [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. While a person with a twisted mind simply fails to find good, someone with a deceitful tongue actively plunges into actual harm [מלבי״ם]. This downfall happens on multiple levels. Socially, it describes a person who speaks with outward innocence and hypocrisy while secretly planning to ambush someone else. Their punishment is fitting: they fall into the exact trap they designed for another [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Financially, this is the person who constantly dodges debts, pushing off creditors day after day with empty excuses, which ultimately leads to the loss of all their property [אלשיך]. On a philosophical level, deceitful speech represents the use of misleading logic and false inquiries that lead a person into heresy, a profound evil into which they fall [מלבי״ם]. In some cases, a single harmful statement is enough to trigger this complete collapse [עמנואל הרומי].

Taking a broader look, these character flaws serve as a strict warning about parental responsibility. Parents must not allow their children to blindly follow their own desires. Anyone who wants to raise children must understand the necessity of teaching them morals and discipline early on. Without the right education, a child is at risk of growing up with a twisted mind, eventually becoming destructive and bringing deep sorrow to their entire family [אמרי דעת].
