Blind stubbornness and a refusal to accept authority set a person on an unavoidable path to self-destruction. The life of a rebellious individual and the harsh consequences of their actions are permanently tied together. A deeply foolish person can become entirely defined by absolute refusal and defiance [רש"י, אבן עזרא, מלבי"ם]. Their communication is reduced to nothing but anger and bitterness [ביאור שטיינזלץ], and any attempt at correction or scolding is completely useless against them [אבן עזרא]. This person does not simply ignore moral guidance; they actively seek out wrongdoing. They dedicate themselves to rebelling against God, against basic common sense, and against the established authority of earthly leaders and judges [רלב"ג, עמנואל הרומי, אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that through this constant defiance, the rebellious person ultimately brings disaster upon themselves. They operate under the false illusion that their sheer stubbornness will somehow serve as a shield. Instead, their behavior triggers a severe and merciless reaction. A cruel force is unleashed against them in a highly targeted manner, much like a predator set loose upon its prey [מצודת ציון]. This punishment is carried out without a trace of pity [אבן עזרא].

Commentators explain that this merciless response operates on two complementary levels. In the physical world, it takes the form of flesh and blood agents. Law enforcement, government officials, and police are sent by the authorities to physically subdue and punish the one who refuses to obey the law [אלשיך, עמנואל הרומי, רלב"ג]. On a spiritual level, a destructive angel is sent directly by God. This divine agent may be sent to end the sinner's life in this world [אבן עזרא, אלשיך], or to judge and punish them after death, delivering a precise, measure for measure penalty for their actions [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. In a deeply tragic twist, the severe blows delivered by this cruel force do not always bring about a change of heart. Sometimes, even while enduring harsh punishment, the individual remains entrenched in their ways, continuing to sin out of sheer, blind rebellion [רלב"ג].
