Proverbs 18:16Sefaria

מַתָּ֣ן אָ֭דָם יַרְחִ֣יב ל֑וֹ וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְדֹלִ֣ים יַנְחֶֽנּוּ׃

The act of giving is a powerful key that unlocks closed doors, removes obstacles, and elevates a person's social and spiritual standing. Generosity does not merely impact the receiver; it actively paves a wide, honorable path for the giver. On a practical level, offering gifts opens avenues in business and personal relationships. When an individual must stand before people in positions of power, a well-placed gift clears the way, brings profit, and grants direct access [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some suggest that presenting gifts to the wealthy and influential ensures that, during times of trouble, these powerful figures will remember the giver and advocate on their behalf [מלבי״ם]. A sharper perspective views this dynamic as a reference to a bribe, which can rescue a person from distress and guide them safely past judges to avoid a harsh ruling [אבן עזרא].

In contrast, the primary approach among commentators focuses on the profound virtue of charity. Giving charity expands a person's portion in both this world and the next [רש״י]. Even a poor individual who gives from their limited means will see their own sustenance increase [אלשיך]. A wealthy person is compared to a funnel connecting God and the poor; when the wealthy open the bottom of the funnel to provide for those in need, God widens the top, pouring down abundant blessing. Through this process, the very act of giving expands the giver's capacity to receive [אלשיך]. Furthermore, charity holds the power to transform strict judgment into broad mercy [חומת אנך], removing anxiety and granting a person a generous heart and true peace of mind [אמרי דעת].

The ultimate reward of being led before great individuals takes on different meanings depending on the nature of the generosity. In the physical world, society grants immense respect to a generous person who contributes to its causes, eventually seating them in the company of kings and important leaders [רש״י, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Spiritually, these great individuals are understood to be Torah scholars. A person who financially supports those who study will eventually earn the right to sit alongside them under a single canopy. Because of their financial backing, the supporter is considered a full partner in the scholars' learning [אלשיך, חומת אנך].

Beyond physical wealth, the concept of giving also extends to the intellectual realm. When a wise person shares knowledge and teaches others, their own mind expands. This distinct form of spiritual generosity elevates the teacher, bringing them closer to the exalted spiritual level of the holy Patriarchs [עמנואל הרומי].
