Proverbs 18:23Sefaria

תַּחֲנוּנִ֥ים יְדַבֶּר־רָ֑שׁ וְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר יַעֲנֶ֥ה עַזּֽוֹת׃

Social gaps and power imbalances between people are often most clearly revealed in the way they speak to one another. A person's financial state frequently shapes their communication style and their general attitude toward those around them. The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic as a reflection of common social reality. A person lacking means usually speaks with submission, fear, and reverence, particularly when forced to ask for help or a loan. This humble approach stems from a clear recognition of their vulnerable situation and serves as a vital survival tool to quiet arguments and avoid conflict. In sharp contrast, a wealthy individual, secure in their assets and fearing no one, often responds with arrogance, pride, and harshness, regardless of whether the matter directly concerns them. This harshness takes the form of strong, blunt statements [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא].

From this everyday reality emerges a clear moral lesson regarding proper conduct. A person should adopt the trait of humility and speak softly, much like the poor individual, even when confronted by someone who responds with arrogance. This dynamic of humility in the face of authority is also the proper approach for a student interacting with a teacher [רש״י]. Ultimately, the aggressive and forceful behavior of the wealthy does not pay off in the long run. Such rigid harshness can easily push away loved ones and eventually lead to the person's own downfall [רלב״ג].

Offering a very different perspective, another interpretation presents a rare bright spot in the relationship between the rich and the poor. In this view, the wealthy person's response is not one of harsh speech, but rather an act of self-restraint. When the poor individual approaches with sincere pleas, the rich person subdues their own natural toughness and willingly grants the request [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper level, these interactions serve as a metaphor for the internal struggles within the human mind. The poor and the rich symbolize two opposing forces. The poor represents the intellect and the good inclination, which operate with humility and offer sincere, proper prayer before God. The rich, on the other hand, symbolizes materialism, physical desires, and the evil inclination, all of which are characterized by pride, stubbornness, and flawed speech [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. When applied to the pursuit of wisdom, the poor individual represents the genuine seeker of truth who approaches learning with reverence, caution, and carefully measured steps. Conversely, the wealthy figure represents someone who chases after imaginary desires, breaks down boundaries, and speaks with reckless haste [עמנואל הרומי].
