Psalms 121:6Sefaria

יוֹמָ֗ם הַשֶּׁ֥מֶשׁ לֹֽא־יַכֶּ֗כָּה וְיָרֵ֥חַ בַּלָּֽיְלָה׃

God’s constant care wraps around a person at all hours, offering a shield against the extreme and opposing forces of the natural world. The primary approach among commentators focuses on physical safety from harsh climates. Throughout the day, God guards against the intense heat and dryness of the sun, and during the night, He prevents harm from the cold and dampness associated with the moon [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. These daily shifts between heat and cold represent the natural extremes that are the primary causes of human illness. This divine shelter flows directly from the earlier image of God acting as a protective shade, specifically designed to defend a person from both scorching heat and freezing ice [רד״ק].

Ordinarily, human beings are expected to take practical steps to guard themselves against the elements, as one cannot simply rely on miracles to suspend the laws of nature. However, an individual who consistently pursues good deeds earns an extraordinary level of divine providence, receiving God's direct protection even against these ordinary, everyday hazards [אלשיך].

Beyond the immediate physical and medical implications, this imagery serves as a broad metaphor assuring that nothing at all will bring harm to the individual. It also carries a historical echo of the Exodus from Egypt. During that journey, God sheltered the Israelites with the Clouds of Glory, which actively blocked the harsh heat of the sun by day and the biting cold of the night [מאירי].
