God's care for humanity is marked by an absolute closeness and constant protection that is entirely different from any human security. The contrast between an earthly king and the Creator is striking. A human king sits safely inside his palace while his guards surround him on the outside. God, however, acts in the exact opposite manner; His servants sit safely inside, and He is the one who guards them from the outside [תורה תמימה]. This divine protection is completely comprehensive, offering a shield against human enemies, daily troubles, and all types of harm and illness [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The imagery of a shadow adds another vital layer to this concept of protection. The primary approach among commentators is that just as a physical shadow provides relief from the intense heat of the daytime sun, God shields people from natural dangers, heavenly forces, and even the hazards of the night [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Moving beyond mere physical safety, the shadow also serves as a metaphor for a spiritual refuge, where God gathers a person to take shelter under His wings [מאירי].
This deep, unbreakable closeness is further emphasized by the idea of God standing at a person's right hand. A regular guard cannot possibly remain by someone's side at every single moment, but God is attached to a person just as a shadow constantly accompanies them without pause [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This permanent presence at the right hand ensures that His help is instantly available at any given moment. He accompanies people in all their actions, granting them the strength they need to act and achieve success [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
