Psalms 139:12Sefaria

God's presence and care extend far beyond the familiar boundaries of nature, completely unaffected by the limits of light and darkness. A person cannot find shelter in the shadows, because Divine vision operates on an entirely different level than human sight. The primary approach among commentators is that it is impossible to escape or hide from God, as the dark offers no cover or barrier against Him [רש״י, רד״ק]. The deepest shadows conceal absolutely nothing from His eyes This is because God does not rely on a physical sense of sight that requires light to detect objects. Therefore, the absence of light in any given place or time does not hinder Him in the slightest [מלבי״ם].

To God, the night shines exactly as bright as the day From His perspective, light and darkness are completely equal, with absolutely no difference between them The repeated emphasis on this idea serves to reinforce the understanding that no shadow, no matter how deep, can conceal anything from Him [רד״ק]. Knowing this reality provides a deep sense of security. Because God illuminates the dark, a person has no reason to fear the blackness of the nights ahead, just as one does not fear the daylight [אלשיך].

Another layer of meaning explores the relationship between God and darkness. Generally, darkness is not directly associated with God, whose name is most often linked to light, as seen in the story of creation. However, there are moments when the night shines like the day, such as the night of the Exodus from Egypt, which radiated as intensely as the height of the summer sun. In such moments, light and darkness become one, and God's name is tied to the night and the dark just as powerfully as it is to the light of day [חומת אנך].
