Psalms 139:9Sefaria

אֶשָּׂ֥א כַנְפֵי־שָׁ֑חַר אֶ֝שְׁכְּנָ֗ה בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית יָֽם׃

Humans sometimes entertain the thought of outrunning their circumstances or escaping to the farthest corners of reality, only to find that God’s presence is already there. No matter how fast or far a person might travel, escaping His watchfulness is entirely impossible.

The primary approach among commentators is to view this hypothetical flight as a metaphor for unimaginable speed. Imagine a person growing wings and soaring across the sky as fast as the morning light. This light breaks and spreads across the horizon in a single instant, journeying from the far east to the distant west [רש"י, מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, המאירי]. [אבן עזרא] notes a precise detail in this imagery, suggesting it describes the very first rays reflecting on the clouds just before the sun actually rises. Geographically, the dawn represents the starting point of this journey at the extreme eastern edge of the world [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

From this eastern origin, the rapid flight continues all the way to the opposite end of the earth, landing at the farthest western reaches. Commentators generally agree that this western boundary is associated with the sea because the great body of water lies directly west of the Land of Israel. However, [אבן עזרא] offers an additional layer, suggesting a literal interpretation of the ocean. By mentioning the sea, the text completes a full picture of the physical universe, adding the waters to the previously mentioned realms of heaven and the deep earth. Ultimately, this rapid movement from east to west proves that even at the absolute edge of the physical world, a person remains entirely within God's providence [רד"ק, מלבי"ם].

Taking a completely different, spiritual approach, [אלשיך] removes the concepts of geography and physical speed entirely. Instead, the morning light serves as a symbol for the spread of God's presence and goodness throughout the world. The distant sea represents the exact boundary line where this holiness stops. In this view, the journey is about a person seeking refuge at the very edge of God's presence. They try to position themselves at the exact seam between good and evil, clinging to the farthest limits of goodness in order to avoid slipping into the realm of evil.
