אִם־אֶסַּ֣ק שָׁ֭מַיִם שָׁ֣ם אָ֑תָּה וְאַצִּ֖יעָה שְּׁא֣וֹל הִנֶּֽךָּ׃

God's presence fills the entirety of creation, spanning from the highest peaks to the deepest abysses. There is simply no place where a person can hide or escape from Him.

If an individual attempts to flee upward, taking flight into the sky, they will not find distance. The primary approach among commentators is that even if someone believes they can separate themselves by taking flight and ascending to the heavens, they will discover that God is already there [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא]. Offering a unique perspective, [אלשיך] explains that the heavens represent the physical realm of the celestial spheres. Because the Divine Presence retreated to this realm following the sin of the first man, God's presence is undeniably clear in that high place.

Conversely, a person might try to flee by descending into the depths. The underworld represents the deepest parts of the earth, serving as the absolute opposite of the heavens [אבן עזרא, מאירי]. If an individual were to go down into the deep earth and prepare their bed there [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא], laying down in the very place of human death, they would find that God is present even in that abyss [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Taking a deeper spiritual approach to this lowest depth, [אלשיך] views it as a symbol for realms of impurity and external forces. A person might try to hide in a place of absolute evil because they find it too difficult to bear the sheer power of God's voice. However, they will inevitably discover that His presence penetrates even the darkest and most impure spaces.

Placing these two extremes against each other—the outer envelope of the heavens and the deepest center of the earth—illustrates that any movement a person makes in the world will always lead them to an encounter with God [רד״ק].
