God's care and watchfulness over human life cover every single moment, from the simplest physical movements to the most complex biological processes. Along with sitting and standing, walking on a path and lying down to rest represent the four basic physical movements of a person. Every transition and change in our posture is completely open and known to Him [רד"ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that God places a boundary or frame around a person. He surrounds human bodies, thoughts, and paths from all sides, setting limits that cannot be crossed. Because of this, no action ever occurs without His direct knowledge and oversight.
Another perspective compares God's watchfulness to the process of sifting grain to separate the edible food from the waste. In this sense, God carefully measures, tests, and sorts through human actions [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This careful selection process even begins at conception, as God extracts the absolute purest part of the seed from which a child is formed [רש"י, תורה תמימה]. God knows our life paths completely, much like someone deeply familiar with an ingrained habit [רד"ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, it is God Himself who actively guides, teaches, and accustoms a person to perform their various actions [מלבי"ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The paths of a person also refer to the body's natural systems and senses. God designed every single organ with a precise, unique function that no other part of the body can perform [אבן עזרא]. Taking a deeper biological and philosophical view, God originally separated the human structure into male and female specifically to ensure the survival of humanity. Furthermore, God tied human beings to basic earthly needs, such as eating and relieving themselves. These daily bodily functions serve as a constant reminder of our human limits, preventing anyone from ever mistakenly believing that they are a god [אלשיך].
