Psalms 139:15Sefaria

The formation of life within the womb is a profound wonder, entirely hidden from human eyes yet completely visible and known to the Creator. Looking back at the very beginning of existence, one can recognize that God's careful watch begins during the earliest, unseen stages of creation, long before the body takes any recognizable shape. Absolutely nothing is concealed from Him.

The essence of this early existence encompasses both the physical form and inner traits. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the very core of a person's being. Some view this simply as the physical body itself [רד״ק]. Others see it as a hidden potential that has not yet been brought to life, much like the reality of old age is already secretly present within a young boy [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, it represents the intense power and strength contained within the initial drop of life from which a person is formed [אלשיך].

The earliest moments of creation take place in complete secrecy. This hidden beginning describes the exact moment of conception [רש״י, אלשיך]. Following this, the physical matter begins to coagulate and take shape, a process compared to the way milk is curdled into cheese [רד״ק, מאירי]. However, another perspective argues against this comparison to pressing or curdling, maintaining that the process simply refers to the basic act of creation [אבן עזרא]. Taking a more spiritual approach, this hidden creation actually refers to the making of the spiritual soul, which is drawn down from a concealed and elevated place [מלבי״ם].

As the creation continues, the complex development of the unborn child—its sinews, bones, flesh, and skin—is compared to the delicate art of embroidery. Just as an embroidered tapestry is made of many threads woven into complex patterns, so too is the intricate formation of the human organs [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. Bridging the physical and the spiritual, this weaving process describes the creation of the physical body as an exact, tailored garment for the soul. Every physical organ directly corresponds to a specific spiritual power, proving that a single Creator designed them both [מלבי״ם].

This miraculous formation takes place in an environment compared to the lowest depths of the earth. The primary approach among commentators is that this is not actual ground, but rather a powerful metaphor for the womb. It is a low, dark, and hidden space that closely resembles deep underground caverns [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. Drawing on ancient traditions, this imagery points precisely to the lowest section of the mother's womb, the specific area where the embryo rests during the first months of pregnancy [תורה תמימה, רש״י, מצודת דוד].
