At the heart of this prayer is a powerful cry for life, built upon the imagery of emptying a liquid from a vessel. The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a poetic metaphor for death. Just as water fills a pitcher, the spirit and soul fill the human body. The moment of death is likened to a vessel being overturned and its contents spilled out [רד"ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. Therefore, the singer is begging God not to pour out his soul to death [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the immediate physical danger, this plea carries deeper spiritual weight. The imagery of pouring out can be understood as a form of distancing, turning the prayer into a request that God should not send the soul away or remove it from His presence [רש"י]. Others view it as a plea against premature death. The singer asks that his soul not be separated from his body before its proper time, ensuring that when the end finally comes, the soul can ascend in a state of purity and completeness [מאירי].
