Psalms 146:8Sefaria

God's direct involvement in human life stands in stark contrast to human limitation. Instead of placing absolute reliance on people, such as doctors, a person should trust in God and turn to Him in prayer [אבן עזרא]. This Divine intervention takes many forms, beginning with the restoration of sight. On a physical level, God performs miraculous healings of eye diseases and actual blindness [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Beyond the physical, blindness serves as a metaphor for deep distress that surrounds a person like darkness. In these moments, God brings the sufferer out into the light [רד״ק] and clears the obstacles from their path [מאירי]. Intellectually and spiritually, God opens the eyes of the mind [מלבי״ם], illuminating the vision of sinners so they can recognize their faults and return to Him in repentance [חומת אנך]. Historically, this played out when God opened Jacob's heavy, failing eyes, allowing him to see the Divine image in Joseph's sons and bless them [אלשיך]. Similarly, it reflects the salvation of the Israelites, who groped like the blind through the darkness of their exile [רד״ק].

God also brings liberation from various forms of oppression and hardship, lifting those who are bowed down. Socially and economically, He raises up the poor, the lowly, and those who bend themselves in humility, elevating them to positions of power and wisdom [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. He heals the sick, raising them from their beds of illness [אבן עזרא], and removes the heavy burdens of trouble that weigh down a person's posture [מאירי]. On a spiritual level, this uplifting represents the elevation of fallen sparks of holiness, returning them to their rightful place [חומת אנך]. A historical example of this occurred with Joseph's brothers, who were bowed over in shame following Jacob's death. God straightened their posture by inspiring Joseph to comfort them [אלשיך]. This concept even translates into daily practice. During the Standing Prayer, a person bows, but then stands up straight when mentioning God's name, acknowledging that it is God who straightens those who are bent [תורה תמימה].

The driving force behind all this miraculous and specialized care is God's profound love for the righteous [מלבי״ם, מאירי]. This love often manifests as preventative protection, ensuring that the righteous never fall into poverty, imprisonment, blindness, or a state of being bowed down in the first place [אבן עזרא]. God's love remains constant, even in situations where the righteous are rejected by society or struggle to love themselves [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The title of righteous is broad; it includes those who have sincerely repented [חומת אנך], as well as the Israelites who maintained their integrity while living among foreign nations [רד״ק]. It was this very merit that protected the generation of the twelve tribes from being sent into exile [אלשיך].
