Psalms 16:5Sefaria

A person standing before the temptations of the world must choose what is essential and separate it from the trivial. While many view money, gold, and material success as their ultimate prize and central ambition, King David declares that God alone is his absolute good, his inheritance, and the focus of his life. This is a declaration of absolute faith, recognizing that one's entire world is built upon a connection with the Creator.

The primary approach among commentators is that the concepts of a portion, a share, a cup, and a lot all express the exact same idea of an inheritance. They are repeated simply to strengthen and emphasize the message However, other perspectives highlight subtle differences between these ideas. A share refers to an equal portion divided strictly by measure or weight. A cup represents a portion that a person actively prepares and sets aside for themselves. A lot, by contrast, is something that falls to a person naturally, and it may differ in both quality and quantity from the portions others receive [מלבי"ם].

The concept of the cup draws distinct interpretations. Some reject the literal idea of a drinking cup, explaining instead that the term shares a root with words meaning a calculation or a quota, simply referring to one's allotted share Conversely, another approach views this as a spiritual reference to a future cup of salvation. According to this view, God will eventually host a spiritual feast for the righteous. David expresses a hope that when a lot is cast among the Patriarchs to determine who will lead the blessing over the cup of complete redemption, God will stand at his side and grant him that exact privilege [אלשיך].

Beyond being the ultimate destination, God is also the active guide helping a person reach it. The idea of God supporting one's lot is generally understood as Him providing a foundation of reliance and support He actively assists a person in choosing the good path, operating on the principle that when someone makes an effort to purify themselves, they receive heavenly assistance [רד"ק, מאירי]. God awakens the person's heart to believe in Him [מצודת דוד].

To illustrate this divine help, commentators offer a touching comparison. God is likened to a loving father who takes his son by the hand, gently places it directly on the most beautiful and valuable portion, and tells him to choose it for himself. In light of this imagery, some explain that the concept of support actually implies a lowering or bringing down. God literally lowers the person's hand, guiding it to rest upon the very best destiny, ensuring they find their way to what is truly good [רש"י, מצודת דוד].
