תהלים, פרק מ״ז, פסוק י׳

Psalms 47:10Sefaria

נְדִ֘יבֵ֤י עַמִּ֨ים ׀ נֶאֱסָ֗פוּ עַם֮ אֱלֹהֵ֢י אַבְרָ֫הָ֥ם כִּ֣י לֵ֭אלֹהִים מָֽגִנֵּי־אֶ֗רֶץ מְאֹ֣ד נַעֲלָֽה׃ {פ}

A striking universal vision unfolds where the nations of the world gather in a shared recognition of God's kingship. The primary approach among commentators is that the kings, leaders, and respected figures of the nations will assemble to join the people of Israel, journeying together to the land of Israel [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, המאירי, שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. Others suggest this gathering consists of individuals who are exceptionally generous with their wealth [מצודת ציון]. Alternatively, this group may represent converts who willingly choose to join the Jewish people [תורה תמימה, מלבי״ם], or even martyrs who sacrificed their lives to sanctify God's name [רש״י].

This diverse assembly is specifically associated with Abraham. Commentators agree that Abraham is highlighted because he was the first to publicize God's name throughout the world and the first to welcome converts. When the nations unite to recognize God and follow His paths of charity and justice, they are bringing Abraham's original mission to its ultimate completion. Therefore, they are fittingly identified with him [תורה תמימה, רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, אלשיך, המאירי, מלבי״ם].

In this era, the nature of earthly protection is also brought into focus. One perspective maintains that the world's kings and leaders, who typically protect the weak, will realize they are entirely subordinate to God, who holds the ultimate power to free Israel from their control [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, המאירי]. Another view suggests that the true protectors of the earth are the righteous and pious individuals, whose good deeds shield the world from harsh judgment [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. A third approach attributes this protection directly to God Himself, emphasizing His absolute power to guard all those who place their trust in Him [רש״י, שטיינזלץ].

Through this global gathering and the widespread recognition of His providence, God is universally praised and elevated [מצודת ציון]. His kingship becomes undeniably visible to everyone, proving that He acts exactly as He desires [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, following this great assembly, God will rise to lead the world through new miracles and unprecedented wonders [מלבי״ם].
