תהלים, פרק מ״ז, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 47:3Sefaria

כִּֽי־יְהֹוָ֣ה עֶלְי֣וֹן נוֹרָ֑א מֶ֥לֶךְ גָּ֝ד֗וֹל עַל־כׇּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

A joyful and triumphant announcement rings out to declare God's absolute sovereignty over the entire world [אבן עזרא]. The root of this happiness lies in the recognition that God stands above everything, holding all of creation securely in His hand and inspiring awe across the earth [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. He is deeply revered and honored [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, even though He is supreme and entirely beyond human understanding, He is never disconnected from the world. Instead, He remains an active ruler and guide in everyday reality [אלשיך].

Recognizing His true position serves as a direct response to flawed human philosophies [מלבי״ם]. Against those who deny a primary creator and instead credit the forces of nature or astrology for the way the world runs, this truth establishes that God is completely supreme. At the same time, it challenges those who believe in a creator but assume He ignores human affairs, offers no judgment, and requires no reverence. By highlighting the deep awe He commands, it becomes clear that He is a great King who actively watches over existence, operates within the world, and leads the nations with justice and law.

Furthermore, God's exalted status directly impacts the people who follow Him. Because the Israelites remain closely attached to His name, they are uplifted alongside Him, gaining an elevated standing among the rest of the nations [חומת אנך].
