Psalms 47:6Sefaria

עָלָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים בִּתְרוּעָ֑ה יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה בְּק֣וֹל שׁוֹפָֽר׃

The crowning of God over the entire world is a moment of profound joy and majesty. It is a time when His supreme authority over all nations and His ongoing care for creation are fully recognized.

The primary approach among commentators is that this moment is defined by a profound sense of elevation. God is exalted above all else as the Israelites sing to Him and offer sacrifices [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This spiritual ascent represents a unifying milestone in human history, marking the time when all nations will join together to serve God as one, bringing complete unity to Him and His name [מאירי].

Beyond a general sense of exaltation, this elevation also signals a dramatic shift in how God guides the world. Distinct aspects of the divine identity reflect different forms of interaction with creation: one represents guidance through the steady laws of nature, while another reflects miraculous intervention. During this ultimate crowning, both forms of providence are elevated to a new, wondrous level never seen before [מלבי״ם].

Taking a more historical view, this ascent is linked to triumph in battle, where God subdues opposing nations while the Israelites shout in victory [אבן עזרא]. Looking toward the future, this upward movement also hints at the eventual rediscovery of the hidden Ark of the Covenant, which will one day be brought up and restored to its rightful place [אבן עזרא, חומת אנך].

The grand sounds accompanying these events are festive blasts of the ram's horn, filled with honor and majesty [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While some view the dual mention of these sounds as a poetic repetition emphasizing God's ascent with the horn [מצודת דוד], others see a deep spiritual shift occurring within the blasts themselves, marking a transition from strict judgment to boundless mercy. Divine judgment is seen as departing and rising away from the Israelites, a removal earned through the humble submission expressed by a broken, shouting blast. In its place, divine mercy is awakened by the pure, continuous sound of the horn, completely transforming the atmosphere of strict justice into one of deep compassion [אלשיך, חומת אנך].
