תהלים, פרק מ״ח, פסוק א׳

Psalms 48:1Sefaria

שִׁ֥יר מִ֝זְמ֗וֹר לִבְנֵי־קֹֽרַח׃

Jerusalem has long been recognized as a center of divine protection and the ultimate source of holiness in the world. The praises sung in its honor are rooted in both dramatic historical events and profound prophetic visions.

Looking back at history, the celebration stems from a miraculous deliverance involving a fierce and unusual storm. This violent tempest was so powerful that it shattered mountains and rocks. Yet, despite its devastating force, Mount Zion remained completely untouched, shielded directly by God. This storm was not merely a random natural event but a divine intervention that saved the people of Israel. At that time, an alliance of foreign kings had set sail with the shared goal of conquering the land. God used this very storm to smash their vessels and entirely destroy their invading army [מלבי״ם].

In contrast to this historical view, other perspectives understand these praises as a prophecy pointing toward the messianic era [רד״ק, מאירי]. Rather than looking at a past battle, this vision focuses on the ultimate redemption and the climactic war of Gog and Magog. Once the global turmoil of this final conflict subsides, a new era of peace will emerge where all nations will unite and speak one clear language. In this future reality, the ultimate center of holiness will return to Jerusalem, establishing it forever as the primary city of the world [מאירי]. Consequently, the entire focus is dedicated to the ultimate, future greatness of Jerusalem [רד״ק].
