וְהִגְלֵיתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵהָ֣לְאָה לְדַמָּ֑שֶׂק אָמַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃ {פ}

The punishment facing the Israelites reaches a point of no return, transforming a long-warned day of darkness into a harsh, distant exile [אבן עזרא]. This impending expulsion will not only sweep away the people themselves but will also include the very idols they have chosen to worship [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The destination for this banishment is set far away [מצודות], situated geographically to the east of the Land of Israel [אבן עזרא] or north of Damascus [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, this points to the regions of Halah and Habor, where the Ten Tribes would eventually be taken [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

The specific location of Damascus serves as a stark contrast between this future devastation and the past struggles of the Israelites. In earlier times, the people suffered at the hands of the kings of Aram and faced a partial exile to Damascus [רש״י, רד״ק]. However, that initial displacement was not perceived as an unbearable tragedy, primarily because Damascus sat close to their own borders and had even been under Israelite control in the past [מלבי״ם].

The prophet shatters any illusions the people might have, warning them not to deceive themselves into believing that this new exile will keep them in a familiar, neighboring region [רד״ק]. Instead, God will deliver them into the hands of Sennacherib, who will drive them into a second exile, taking them to distant lands [רש״י] far beyond Damascus [מלבי״ם].

The prophetic warning concludes by highlighting God as the commander of all hosts, emphasizing His absolute authority over every force in the heavens and on earth. This clarifies that the very powers the Israelites mistakenly worship are nothing more than His messengers, entirely bound to His command [רד״ק].
