The illusion that a Divine revelation only brings salvation is shattered when the people refuse to change their ways. Instead of hope, a harsh reality of total destruction emerges, encompassing every level of society. Because the people failed to act properly and turn from their bad behavior, a decree of great trouble and the removal of Divine protection is set in motion [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, רד״ק, אברבנאל].

A deep, inescapable grief will fill every public space. The weeping will be heard throughout the market areas [מצודת ציון]. The mourning will naturally divide the spaces of the city: men will gather in the wide, open plazas in front of the houses to mourn, while women and children will stand in the narrow alleyways behind the homes, echoing with cries of sorrow [מלבי״ם]. The air will be filled with sharp wails and shouts of deep pain and woe [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, אברבנאל].

This profound sadness will not be contained within the city walls; it will pour out into the surrounding fields. The farmers, who work the land, will also be drawn into the widespread grief. Typically, agricultural workers avoid participating in public mourning so they do not lose precious time in the fields. However, since the land will be left completely desolate, their plowing and planting will have been in vain, leaving them with no harvest to reap and no work to do [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. Another perspective paints a vivid scene where groups of farmers working in the fields will suddenly be met with the overwhelming sounds of crying drifting from the city, seamlessly merging the sorrow of the rural landscapes with the despair of the urban centers [רש״י, שטיינזלץ].

To further deepen the collective pain, people highly skilled in wailing and leading cries of grief will be summoned [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. Their role is to stir the emotions of the crowds and amplify the bitterness of the mourning [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. The sheer scale of the disaster will be so vast that these professional wailers and countless groups of mourners will constantly cross paths, wandering a land utterly consumed by loss [רש״י, רד״ק].
